PC Sales Decline as Mobile Devices are on the Rise

With 2015 marking the lowest consumer interest in desktops and laptops since 2008, and with the rising sales of tablets and other mobile devices, it’s practically official – the PC is dead. The desktops and laptops that once revolutionized the global industry are now nothing more than oversized, clunky, and inefficient paper weights. Taking their place are streamlined, powerful, and portable devices that are just as capable of performing all of the tasks once made convenient by the PC. And, this trend isn’t only affecting modern businesses; consumers are also making the shift to mobile devices for all of their computing needs.

Mobile Devices are the Dominant Computing Platform

With Google rearranging its search engine algorithms to prioritize mobile-friendly sites, the writing is on the wall – the tech world is progressing with mobile devices firmly in mind. In fact, all of the big players in Internet and tech, including Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft, are putting mobile devices at the forefront of their growth strategies. Further solidifying the case is the fact that Intel, the leading supplier of microprocessors for computers, has reported reduced demand from businesses for desktop computers and as a result, the company has revised its revenue outlook to reflect the industry’s changing environment.

Apple Bucks the Trend

While the research firm IDC reports that PC shipments fell 10.6 percent during the fourth quarter of 2015, sales of Apple’s premium MacBook Air and MacBook Pro computers weren’t as severely affected by the increase in smartphone, tablet, and wearable tech sales. In fact, Apple experienced an increase in its share of the global PC market with the company’s fourth quarter PC shipments rising nearly 3 percent to 5.7 million units.

But, if one was to compare sales numbers, the trend is even easier to see. Apple’s Mac sales accounted for just 10 percent of the company’s revenue for that quarter. Meanwhile, more than 70 percent was produced by the iPhone alone.
